Places to Visit in Amarkantak

Narmada Udgam Kund
This is the exact place where the Narmada River starts. It is a sacred spot and has a kund (water tank) built by the Kalachuri kings. Pilgrims collect the first drops of the river here for rituals.

Ancient Kalachuri Temples


These stone temples were built in the 11th century by Kalachuri ruler Karnadeva. You’ll see well-carved pillars and sculptures. The temples are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Jwaleshwar Mahadev Temple


This is the spot where the Narmada River turns west. The temple has a naturally formed Shiva Lingam and is surrounded by a forest.

Kapil Dhara Waterfall


This waterfall is around 100 feet high. It is the first big fall of the Narmada River. It is named after Kapil Muni, who meditated nearby.

Dudh Dhara Waterfall


Located just after Kapil Dhara, this fall has a milky white water flow. The route is through a small forest trail. It is peaceful and less crowded.

Sonemuda (Origin of Sone River)


This is the starting point of the Sone River. From here, you get a clear valley view and can see the river flowing down through the hills.

Mai Ki Bagiya


This is a small forest area filled with fruit trees and flowers. Locals believe Maa Narmada used to play here. The place has small temples and shaded walking paths.

Sarvodaya Jain Temple


This temple is under construction. The main idol is made of eight metals (Ashtadhatu). The construction does not use cement or iron.

Kabir Chabutra


This is a small raised platform where the poet-saint Kabir is believed to have meditated. The place has writings of his dohas and is visited by his followers.

 

Trimukhi Temple


This temple has a three-faced idol. It was built during the Kalachuri period. It is less known but has a calm environment.
