Places to Visit in Gwalior

Gwalior Fort

The Gwalior Fort stands on a sandstone hill and overlooks the entire city. It was built by Raja Man Singh Tomar in the 15th century, though the site has seen rulers since the 6th century. The fort is known for its massive walls, rock-cut Jain sculptures, and historic palaces.
Inside, you’ll find Man Mandir Palace, which is famous for its colourful blue and yellow tile work and beautiful carvings. This palace was also used as a prison during later Mughal rule. The fort has seen battles between Mughals, Marathas, and Britishers, making it a key witness to India’s political history.

Jai Vilas Palace Museum

Built in 1874 by Jayaji Rao Scindia, this palace was meant to impress the British Viceroy. It mixes European and Italian styles of architecture.
The palace is still partly the residence of the Scindia family, but most of it is a museum. It’s famous for housing the world’s largest pair of chandeliers, which had to be tested by hanging elephants from the ceiling! It also has a silver train used to serve guests at dinner, along with royal costumes, weapons, and furniture. It’s a real glimpse into the lifestyle of one of India’s most powerful royal families.

Teli Ka Mandir

This is Gwalior’s oldest surviving temple, built around the 8th century during the Pratihara dynasty. What makes it unique is its architecture – it has a Dravidian-style roof (usually seen in South India) and a Nagara-style base (from North India).
Unlike most temples of the time, it does not follow the usual structure. Though it’s now mostly used for sightseeing, the temple’s design and age make it important for both historians and architects.

Sun Temple (Surya Mandir)

This modern temple was built by G.D. Birla in the 1980s, inspired by the famous Sun Temple of Konark in Odisha. The entire structure is made of red sandstone and white marble, and the detailed carvings make it a peaceful stop.
Though not very old, locals come here for worship and meditation. The clean surroundings and simple beauty make it a nice break from the city’s hustle.

Sas Bahu Temple

Located near the Gwalior Fort, this 11th-century temple was built by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty. The name “Sas Bahu” (Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law) actually comes from ‘Sahasrabahu’, another name of Lord Vishnu.
It is known for its detailed stone carvings and twin temples, one smaller than the other. Though partially damaged, its pillars and ceilings still display fine craftsmanship.

Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum

This palace was built by Raja Man Singh Tomar for his wife Mrignayani, who belonged to the Gujjar tribe and insisted on drinking water only from the River Rai. The palace now serves as a museum and houses rare Hindu and Jain sculptures, weapons, coins, and ancient inscriptions found around the region.
