Why choose a Kanha safari in winter?

A Kanha safari in winter suits travellers who enjoy the whole forest experience: bird calls before sunrise, dew on the grass and the changing light between tall sal trunks. A tiger sighting is exciting, but the journey also offers time to notice deer, forest birds and the landscape itself.

The reserve’s weather information places winter broadly between November and February, with December and January the coldest months. Severe cold and ground frost can occur in valleys and meadows. Plan for the exposed jeep ride rather than judging the temperature from your hotel room.

November & February

Consider these months if you prefer the edges of the winter season. Keep a warm jacket for early starts and check the forecast for your actual dates.

December & January

Choose these months for a deep-winter forest atmosphere. Prepare for very cold mornings; holiday dates also deserve early permit and hotel planning.

Mist is weather-dependent, so neither fog nor a particular wildlife encounter can be promised. For hotel and transfer options, explore our Kanha tour packages.

Kanha winter safari timings: what to plan for

Kanha runs morning and afternoon safari sessions. Entry and exit times vary with the season and park instructions. The table below shows the usual winter timings by month. Use it to plan meals and transfers, and treat the exact minutes on your permit as final.

Kanha winter safari timings by month (entry to exit) • All times IST
MonthMorning safariAfternoon safari
November6:15 am to 11:00–11:30 am3:00 pm to 5:45 pm
December6:30 am to 11:00–11:30 am3:00 pm to 5:30 pm
January6:45 am to 11:00–11:30 am3:00 pm to 5:45 pm
February6:30 am to 11:00–11:30 am3:00 pm to 6:15 pm

Planning tip: mornings are the coldest part of the trip, so wear warm layers and ask your stay for a packed breakfast. For the afternoon drive, eat lunch early and keep a jacket for the return after sunset.

The park can change timings by notice. Confirm the exact entry, exit and reporting times for your date on the permit and with your operator. Reporting time at the gate is earlier than the safari start time.

Check Wednesday before booking. MPOnline lists a Wednesday half-day closure for Madhya Pradesh tiger reserves. Treat Wednesday afternoon as unavailable for a core safari unless the current official calendar says otherwise. Afternoon safaris are also usually closed on Holi and Diwali. Confirm buffer availability and other closure dates separately.

For an organised visit, review our Kanha National Park safari booking assistance. Check the official MPOnline Kanha booking portal for current permits and notices.

Kanha safari zones: choose the gate first

The four core tourism zones are Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi. The main entry gates are Khatia (also written Khatiya), Mukki and Sarhi. A zone is the area covered by your safari; a gate is where you enter. The names are not interchangeable.

Core zoneWhat to check before paying
KanhaCheck the permitted entry gate for your session and permit type; do not assume every gate is available for every booking.
KisliCheck gate compatibility and your hotel’s actual transfer time.
MukkiIf staying on the Mukki side, check matching permits before confirming accommodation.
SarhiCompare Sarhi-side accommodation and permitted gate options for the selected session.

Which zone is best in winter? There is no reliable “best zone” that guarantees tigers. Let permit availability, your entry gate, transfer time and preferred stay guide the choice. Animal movements and sightings vary.

Buffer experiences are separately booked. The official reserve pages list Khatia, Khapa and Sijora, and also identify Phen in their tourism information. Check the current portal’s exact area, gate and session before accepting a buffer option. A buffer permit does not provide access to a core zone.

Our practical suggestion: confirm the safari date, session, zone and entry gate together, then choose a nearby stay. Avoid booking a hotel first and discovering that the available permit uses a distant gate.

How to book and understand the total safari cost

Start with your travel dates, number of guests and preferred stay location. Check permit availability before making non-refundable hotel or transport arrangements. For Christmas, New Year and weekends, leave time to compare alternate dates and sessions.

  1. Choose the permit: verify the date, core or buffer area, zone, session and entry gate.
  2. Match traveller details: enter names and identity information exactly as required; carry the original identification accepted for your booking.
  3. Understand the vehicle arrangement: ask whether the quote is for a full vehicle or a shared-seat arrangement and what remains payable.
  4. Get an itemised quote: separate permit, registered jeep, mandatory guide, transfers, accommodation, meals and applicable taxes.
  5. Reconfirm before travelling: check reporting instructions, current cancellation terms and any park notices.

MPOnline states that jeep and guide charges are additional to the online permit. A tour package may bundle these, so request the inclusions in writing. Prices and policies can change; a current quote is more useful than an old rate chart.

What to wear and carry for a winter safari

Keep the cold out

Thermal base layer, fleece, wind-resistant jacket, wool cap covering the ears, gloves, warm socks and closed shoes. Ask your stay whether a clean blanket is available.

Keep your day simple

Original accepted ID, permit copy, binoculars, charged camera, spare battery, lens cloth, drinking water and personal essentials. Secure loose items before departure.

  • Wear muted colours. Olive, brown and subdued neutrals suit the forest setting.
  • Arrange breakfast in advance. Ask the guide where eating is allowed; carry all waste out.
  • Keep children warm. Pack spare layers and discuss the long open-jeep ride before booking.
  • Protect camera batteries. Keep a spare in an inner pocket and avoid changing lenses on a dusty track.
  • Listen and stay seated. Follow your guide, keep voices low and never ask the driver to chase an animal.
  • Respect the route. Leave the jeep only where park staff expressly permit it; do not feed wildlife or use playback calls to attract birds.

For photography, let the driver stop safely before you raise your camera. Mist may soften visibility, so enjoy the atmosphere rather than expecting a clear close-up at every turn.

A relaxed 2-night Kanha winter itinerary

This suggested plan gives you one morning and one afternoon drive without adding an arrival-day rush. Adjust it to permit availability and avoid a Wednesday afternoon core booking.

  1. Day 1 · Arrive and settle inTravel to your confirmed gate area, check in, verify the next day’s reporting time and prepare warm clothes. Keep the evening light and sleep early.
  2. Day 2 · Morning and afternoon safariLeave for the gate at the advised time. Rest and eat between drives. Return for a warm dinner; neither drive carries a sighting guarantee.
  3. Day 3 · Breakfast and onward travelCheck out after breakfast. Add another permitted safari only if it fits comfortably with your onward journey.

Arriving through Jabalpur? Allow time for your chosen gate and road conditions. You can also compare a Kanha and Pachmarhi holiday if you want to combine forest drives with a hill-station stay.

Kanha safari in winter: FAQs

Is winter a good time for a Kanha safari?

Yes. November to February suits travellers who enjoy cool days, misty forest scenery and wildlife watching. December and January need serious warm layers for open-jeep mornings. Tiger sightings are never guaranteed.

What are the winter safari timings in Kanha?

In winter, the morning safari in Kanha usually runs from about 6:15–6:45 am (later in December and January) to 11:00–11:30 am. The afternoon safari usually runs from 3:00 pm to 5:30–6:15 pm. Exact timings can change by park notice, so confirm the time printed on your permit.

Which Kanha zone is best in winter?

There is no guaranteed best zone. Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi are the four core tourism zones. Choose an available permit, a compatible entry gate and accommodation that keeps transfers practical.

Is Kanha open on Wednesday?

Morning safaris run on Wednesday, but afternoon safaris in the core zones of Madhya Pradesh tiger reserves are closed on Wednesdays. Afternoon safaris are also usually closed on Holi and Diwali. Check buffer options and the current calendar separately.

Are jeep and guide charges included in the online permit?

The MPOnline portal states that vehicle and guide charges are extra to the online permit. For a package booking, ask for an itemised quote showing what is included.

How many safaris should I plan?

For a relaxed first visit, consider two nights with one morning and one afternoon safari, subject to availability. More drives give more time to explore, but do not guarantee any particular animal sighting.
