About this place +

Begin with Khajuraho’s great sandstone landmark. The soaring central shikhara rises above a cluster of smaller spires, while bands of carved figures wrap around the temple. Suggested time
40–60 min
Getting there
Walk inside the Western Group

Compare the mountain-like outline with the small figures carved around the walls.

Keep the Western Group together as one walking visit; your SUV waits outside.

लक्ष्मण मंदिर

About this place +

This richly carved temple is dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu. Look beyond the main tower to the elevated platform, entrance and wall carvings that make the entire building part of the story. Suggested time
35–50 min
Getting there
Walk inside the Western Group

Follow the relationship between the doorway, carved stone walls and the central Vishnu image.

03. Devi Jagadambi Temple

देवी जगदम्बी मंदिर

About this place +

Sharing a raised platform with Kandariya Mahadeva, Devi Jagadambi is an intimate counterpoint to its taller neighbour. Its bands of sculpture reward a slower look. Suggested time

Getting there
Walk from Kandariya Mahadeva

About this place +

07. Chausath Yogini Temple

चौंसठ योगिनी मंदिर

About this place +

Khajuraho’s Chausath Yogini is strikingly different from its sandstone temples. Granite cells stand around an open rectangular courtyard, with the sky becoming part of the experience. It is among the earliest surviving temples here. Walk slowly around the surviving shrines and let the simple, weathered stone change the pace of your day.

About this place +

Dedicated to Vishnu’s Vamana form, this Eastern Group temple offers a quieter setting away from the busiest Western Group paths. It pairs naturally with nearby Javari and Brahma on a half-day eastern circuit.

Suggested time
20–30 min
Getting there

Javari is a compact temple with a distinctive carved entrance and an elegant shikhara. Its smaller scale makes it easier to take in the whole building at once. Suggested time

12. Brahma Temple

About this place +

Despite its familiar name, the Brahma Temple contains a four-faced Shivalinga. Its relatively restrained form provides a useful contrast with Khajuraho’s heavily carved later temples. Look at the compact sanctuary and roof, and take in the quieter village setting around it rather than expecting another enormous monument.

Suggested time
15–25 min

About this place +

The Archaeological Museum helps you look at the temples with a more informed eye. 18. Pandav Falls

About this place +

Pandav Falls is a worthwhile outing on the Panna side of Khajuraho. The waterfall drops into a rocky pool with caves nearby, creating a very different setting from the temple lawns. Allow time for the approach and steps, and check local access before setting out. The falls are a sightseeing excursion here; a Panna wildlife safari is a separate activity.

HOW THE TEMPLES CAME TO BE

History of Khajuraho

Khajuraho was a seat of the Chandela kings, who ruled this part of Bundelkhand a thousand years ago. Most of what you see today was built in about one hundred years.

  1. 10th to 11th centuryThe Chandela kings build most of the temples. Inscriptions date many surviving ones to about 970 to 1030 CE.
  2. 1022 CEThe scholar Al-Biruni mentions Khajuraho while travelling with Mahmud of Ghazni's army to Kalinjar.
  3. 12th centuryAbout 85 temples stand here, spread over some 20 sq km.
  4. 1830sLocal people guide the British officer T.S. Burt to the temples, and his report makes them known outside the region.
  5. 1850s to 1860sAlexander Cunningham surveys the site and describes the Western, Eastern and Southern groups.
  6. 1986UNESCO lists the Khajuraho Group of Monuments as a World Heritage Site.
  7. TodayAbout 25 temples survive across roughly 6 sq km. The Khajuraho Dance Festival is held against the temples every February.

PLAN THE DAYS, NOT JUST THE STOPS

Khajuraho itinerary:
1, 2 or 3 days.

These are suggested sightseeing plans. Keep breaks between the temple groups and leave time to look at the stonework.

01 / ONE DAY

The temple essentials

  1. Morning: Begin with Kandariya Mahadeva, Lakshmana and selected Western Group temples.
  2. Afternoon: Choose either the Jain temples or the Southern Group, with a lunch break in between.
  3. Finish: Add Matangeshwar or a quiet local walk if time and access allow.

Best for a short visit. Choose a few places well instead of rushing all 18.

03 / THREE DAYS

Add a different landscape

  1. Days 1–2: Follow the temple-and-culture plan without squeezing in a long drive.
  2. Day 3: Choose Raneh Falls or Pandav Falls as a separate outing, allowing for road time and local access.
  3. Another option: Add a Panna safari with its own permit and a confirmed slot.

An extra day gives nearby excursions the time they deserve.

Visit lengths in this guide are editorial estimates. Your arrival time, interests, weather and site access will shape the final plan.

Khajuraho travel tips:
best time, how to reach, tickets.

Plan comfortable walking time, separate entry arrangements and the right connections for your dates.

01

Best time to visit Khajuraho

October to March is a good starting window for Khajuraho sightseeing; the cooler winter months suit longer temple walks. In warmer weather, begin early and take a midday break.

Monsoon brings a greener setting, while waterfall conditions vary with rainfall. Check local access before an outing.

02

How to reach Khajuraho

By air: Fly to Khajuraho Airport (HJR), then take a local transfer to your stay.

By rail: Khajuraho Railway Station (KURJ) serves the town. Check current train and flight options for your travel dates.

By road: Include Khajuraho in a road trip through the region, or arrange a pickup from your arrival point.

Distances by road: Chhatarpur about 46 km, Jhansi about 175 km and Gwalior about 283 km. Khajuraho railway station is about 6 km from the Western Group entrance.

03

Tickets, timings & guides

The protected Western Group, active places of worship, museums and waterfall sites can have different entry arrangements. Confirm current tickets, opening times and museum closing days before finalising your route.

A local guide can help explain the carvings and the temple groups. Discuss the duration, language and guide fee before the visit.

04

Getting around

Use a tourist car or SUV for transfers between the areas and nearby outings. Continue on foot inside the protected temple grounds.

Raised platforms, steps and uneven stone can affect the pace. Share any walking or mobility needs when planning so that the visit can be adapted.

05

What to carry & wear

Carry drinking water, a hat or umbrella, and comfortable footwear. Choose respectful clothing for places of worship and follow local footwear instructions.

Keep children close on steps and raised platforms. Rest between groups instead of turning every temple into a timed stop.

06

Photography & care

Photograph the architecture and carvings from permitted areas. Follow the photography rules at each shrine or museum, and ask before photographing people.

Avoid touching, leaning on or climbing the carvings. Leave the original stonework as you found it.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Khajuraho FAQs
before you visit.

A few details that make the trip easier to plan.

Which are the best places to visit in Khajuraho?

Start with Kandariya Mahadeva, Lakshmana and the Western Group. Add the Jain temples, the Southern Group and a museum according to your interests. Raneh Falls and Pandav Falls are separate nearby outings. This page gives you 18 places to choose from.

Why is Khajuraho famous?

Khajuraho is famous for its Hindu and Jain temples built by the Chandela kings, mostly in the 10th and 11th centuries. The temples are known for their tall, mountain-like towers and finely carved walls showing gods, dancers, musicians, warriors and everyday life. The Khajuraho Group of Monuments has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

How many temples are there in Khajuraho?

About 85 temples stood here by the 12th century. Around 25 survive today, spread over about 6 sq km in three groups: Western, Eastern (with the Jain temples) and Southern.

Which is the biggest temple in Khajuraho?

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple in the Western Group is the largest and tallest temple in Khajuraho. Its main tower rises above a cluster of smaller spires, and its walls carry hundreds of carved figures.

What is the best time to visit Khajuraho?

October to March is the most comfortable time, as the cooler days suit long temple walks. The Khajuraho Dance Festival is held every February. In summer, see the temples early in the morning and rest in the afternoon.

How do I reach Khajuraho?

Khajuraho has its own airport (HJR) and railway station, about 6 km from the temples. By road, Khajuraho is about 46 km from Chhatarpur, 175 km from Jhansi and 283 km from Gwalior. Check current flights and trains for your dates.

How many days should I keep for Khajuraho?

One day can cover selected temple highlights. Two days give more room for the temple groups and a museum. Add another day for a waterfall excursion or a separately booked Panna safari. These are planning suggestions, not a fixed timetable.

Can I visit all 18 places in one day?

It would be a rushed plan, especially with the two waterfall drives. For a single day, choose the Western Group and one other temple area. Use the longer itinerary if you want the museums and nearby excursions too.

Are the car and guide included in the same entry ticket?

Plan these separately. A car transfer, a local guide, monument entry, museum entry and any forest or waterfall arrangements can be separate items. Ask for a clear quote showing what is included before confirming your trip.

Can I combine Khajuraho with Panna National Park?

Yes, you can plan a heritage visit and a separate Panna safari as part of one trip. The safari needs its own confirmed permit and slot. Keep enough travel time between your stay, the temple area and the selected safari gate.

Does the tourist car go inside the temple grounds?

The car connects the different areas and nearby outings. Within the protected temple grounds, continue on foot. The animated SUV on this page represents those road transfers.

Is the temple walkthrough on this page based on real photographs?

Yes. The Lakshmana interior and wall sculptures use actual photographs. The whole experience stays inside the large temple area on this page. Scroll over the road to continue sightseeing, or enter the temple and scroll inside its photo area.
