The Chitrakoot Deepdan Mela is a five-day Diwali fair, from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj, held at Ramghat on the Mandakini river in Chitrakoot, on the Madhya Pradesh–Uttar Pradesh border. Devotees take a holy dip, float diyas on the river and walk the 5 km Kamadgiri parikrama, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. The nearest railway station, Chitrakoot Dham Karwi, is about 8–11 km away, and Satna is about 77 km by road.
Crowds are very large. Officials have reported footfall of 20 lakh and more on the main Diwali day, so arrive a day early, do the parikrama at dawn, and book your stay weeks ahead.

Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya, the new moon of the Kartik month, usually in October or November. The mela runs for five days around it. Check this year's date before booking. We confirm it for you when we send your plan.
What is the Chitrakoot Deepdan Mela?
Chitrakoot sits on the Madhya Pradesh–Uttar Pradesh border, in Satna district on the MP side. It is one of the most important places in the Ramayana story. Devotees believe Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman spent about eleven and a half years of their exile here.
The Deepdan Mela is linked to that story. As per local belief, after the victory over Lanka, Lord Ram offered deepdan on the Mandakini to thank the sages before going back to Ayodhya. Devotees repeat this every Diwali by floating lamps on the river at Ramghat.
The official Utsav portal of the Government of India lists it as Deepotsav Parv, a five-day festival at Ramghat. The local Nagar Panchayat on the MP side organises the fair. If you want to know how the rest of the state marks the festival, see our guide on Diwali traditions across Madhya Pradesh.

Snan and deepdan at Ramghat. Most pilgrims start with a dip in the Mandakini, then light diyas and float them on the water. MP Tourism notes that Ramghat turns into a sea of lamps during Diwali.
Kamadgiri parikrama. Pilgrims walk barefoot around Kamadgiri hill, which is worshipped as Kamtanath, a form of Lord Ram. The path is about 5 km long and has many temples along the way, including Bharat Milap Mandir. Most people take 3 to 4 hours.
Folk culture. The fair is known for the Diwari dance of Bundelkhand, where groups dance with sticks and peacock feathers. There is also a Ramayana mela, aarti at the ghat and other cultural programmes.
The donkey fair. A large donkey and mule fair, the Gadha Mela, takes place on the Mandakini banks during the Diwali days. It is said to date back to the Mughal period. Traders come from Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and beyond, and the animals often carry film-star names.
AI illustrationWhen is the best time to visit the Deepdan Mela?
The busiest day is Diwali itself, followed by the day before. If you want the full festival feel, arrive on Dhanteras or the day after it. If you want a calmer visit, go on the last day, Bhai Dooj, or a day after the mela ends.
Within a day, the hours before sunrise are the best time for the snan and the parikrama. The path is cooler and less crowded. Keep the evening for deepdan at Ramghat, which looks its best after dark.
| Mela day | Crowd level (typical) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras (day 1) | High | Arriving, settling in, evening aarti |
| Choti Diwali (day 2) | Very high | Parikrama at dawn |
| Diwali (day 3) | Peak | Deepdan at Ramghat |
| Govardhan Puja (day 4) | High | Diwari dance, donkey fair |
| Bhai Dooj (day 5) | Medium to high | A calmer visit |
Crowd levels are a general guide based on local reports. Weather in Chitrakoot is pleasant from October to March, as per Incredible India.

Where to stay during the Deepdan Mela?
Rooms near Ramghat sell out first during the Chitrakoot Deepdan Mela, and many pilgrims camp in the open within about 10 km of the town. Book as early as you can. MP Tourism runs two properties here, MPT Tourist Bungalow and MPT Mandakini Resort, and there are many dharamshalas and lodges near Ramghat.
If rooms in town are full, stay in Satna and drive in early in the morning. Families who want more comfort often pair Chitrakoot with Khajuraho. Our 2 night Khajuraho tour package starts from ₹7,650 per person, and we can add a Chitrakoot day on request.
