Diwali at Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain: Rituals, Darshan and Stay Guide

7 min read By Banjari MP Tours Private Limited

Diwali at Mahakal Ujjain means special aartis, a festive shringar of Baba Mahakal and the Annakut offering, with lakhs of devotees through the five festival days. General darshan is free, but queues can run 3 to 5 hours on festival days. A Sheeghra Darshan ticket (about ₹250) cuts this to roughly an hour. Bhasma Aarti, held at about 4–6 AM, needs an online pass booked well in advance.

Ujjain station is about 2 km from the temple and Indore airport about 55 km. For the calmest darshan, go in the late morning or early afternoon, and avoid the main Diwali night.

Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya, the new moon of the Kartik month, usually in October or November. The festival runs from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj. Check this year's date before booking. We confirm it for you when we send your plan.

How is Diwali at Mahakal Ujjain celebrated?

Mahakaleshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the presiding deity of Ujjain. Devotees see Baba Mahakal as the king of the city, so many festivals are marked at the temple first, in the early morning Bhasma Aarti, before the rest of the city celebrates.

Through the Diwali days, the temple is lit up and the priests perform special aartis with a festive shringar. On the main day, the women of the priests' families perform a special kapoor aarti, and an Annakut bhog of many dishes is offered to Baba Mahakal, as per local news reports.

The temple has also put safety first. In recent years the temple administration banned fireworks inside the complex and allowed only one symbolic phuljhadi in each aarti. Please do not carry crackers to the temple.

For how the rest of the state celebrates, see our guide to Diwali celebrations in Madhya Pradesh.

What rituals happen at Mahakal in Diwali week?

Dhanteras. A special Bhasma Aarti and mahapujan mark the start of the festival. In past years Baba Mahakal has been decorated with dry fruits and sandalwood on this day.

Roop Chaudas and the abhyang snan. Abhyang snan, the festive oil-and-ubtan bath, is part of the Diwali rituals at Mahakal, and a special aarti follows it. The early mornings around Roop Chaudas and Diwali are among the busiest of the week.

Diwali. All the day's aartis, from Bhasma Aarti to the evening aarti and Shayan Aarti, are done in a special festive way. The Annakut is offered, and the temple glows with diyas and lights.

Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Crowds stay high for a day or two after Diwali and then start to ease.

Rituals and timings can change each year. The temple committee announces the festival schedule shortly before Diwali, and we share it with you when we confirm your plan.
