Diwali in Omkareshwar: Ghats, Darshan, Day Plan and Stay Guide

7 min read By Banjari MP Tours Private Limited

Diwali in Omkareshwar is about darshan of the Jyotirlinga, a dip in the Narmada and diyas floated from the ghats in the evening. The temple is open for darshan from about 5 AM to 10:30 PM, general darshan is free, and a paid Shighra Darshan slot can be booked on the official temple website. Omkareshwar is about 77–80 km from Indore, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by road.

Expect heavy crowds on the main festival days. Do the snan and darshan early in the morning, and keep the evening for the Narmada aarti and deepdan.

Why visit Omkareshwar for Diwali?

Omkareshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple stands on Mandhata island in the Narmada, and the island is said to be shaped like the sacred syllable Om. Across the river is the Mamleshwar temple, and devotees visit both for a complete darshan.

Diwali falls in the holy month of Kartik, when many families take a dip in the Narmada and offer diyas to the river. Combine that with a Jyotirlinga darshan and you get a calm, devotional Diwali break, away from the noise of big cities.

It also pairs well with Ujjain. Mahakaleshwar is about 140 km away, so many families do both Jyotirlingas in one trip. Read our guide to Diwali darshan at Mahakal if you plan to add Ujjain.

How is Narmada deepdan done in Omkareshwar?

Deepdan is simple. Buy a small leaf-cup diya with flowers at the ghat, light it, say a prayer to Maa Narmada and let it float away on the water. Many devotees do this after the evening aarti.

As per MP Tourism, a daily Shayan Aarti of Maa Narmada is held at Kotitirth Ghat. In Diwali week, the ghats glow with diyas from the evening onwards, and the view from the bridges is lovely.

Please be careful at the water's edge. The Narmada is deep and fast in places. Stay on the steps, keep children close, and follow the guards posted at the main ghats.

As per the Shri Omkareshwar temple trust, darshan is open from about 5 AM to 10:30 PM, with short breaks during aarti and shringar. Timings can change on festival days.

General darshan is free and runs in a first-come queue. The trust also offers paid Shighra Darshan in time slots, booked online with a photo ID. Local guides put the fee at about ₹300 per person, but check the official website for the current rate. On weekends the trust also issues free darshan slot tokens.

Book only on the official website. We do not promise special darshan, and you should not pay touts who do.

With two days, add the Omkar Parvat parikrama, a walk of about 7 km around the island past old temples. Start early in the morning while it is cool. If you are travelling with senior citizens, skip the parikrama and take a short boat ride instead. It shows you the island and the temple from the water with very little walking.

How to reach Omkareshwar and where to stay for Diwali?

By air: Indore airport is about 77–80 km away, about 2 to 2.5 hours by road. By train: Omkareshwar Road station is about 12 km away, but it has few trains. Indore and Khandwa are better railheads. By road: Ujjain is about 140 km away, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours.

The Indore road climbs through the Simrol ghat section. Leave early on festival days, as traffic builds up near the town by late morning.

There are hotels, guesthouses and dharamshalas on both banks. Rooms close to the temple go first in festival week, so book early.

Our Indore, Ujjain and Omkareshwar package starts from ₹11,400 per person and is the easiest way to see both Jyotirlingas. Short on time? The Mahakal and Omkareshwar darshan tour covers both temples. Ask us for the current price for your dates. You can also browse all our Omkareshwar tour packages.
