Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj: A Diwali 5 Day Trip Plan for Madhya Pradesh

8 min read By Banjari MP Tours Private Limited

The best Diwali 5 day trip plan in Madhya Pradesh runs from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj, with four nights and one base per two days. Pick one of three routes: Jabalpur and Kanha for jungle and the Narmada, Indore–Ujjain–Omkareshwar–Maheshwar for temples, or Pachmarhi and Madhai for hills and a river safari. Each route keeps daily drives under about 170 km, and keeps Diwali night at a calm stay.

Book 3 to 4 weeks ahead. Rooms, cars and safari permits are in short supply in festival week, and MP safari permits open 120 days in advance.

Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya, the new moon of the Kartik month, usually in October or November. The five days run Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Check this year's date before booking. We confirm it for you when we send your plan.

How should you plan a Diwali 5 day trip?

Five days is the right length for a festival break. You can travel on Dhanteras, see the sights on Choti Diwali, spend Diwali night in one place, enjoy Govardhan Puja day and head home on Bhai Dooj.

Keep three simple rules. First, stay at one base for at least two nights, so you are not packing bags every morning. Second, do not plan a long drive on Diwali day itself. Roads, hotels and staff are busy, and you will enjoy the evening more if you are already settled. Third, if your trip includes a tiger reserve, keep Diwali day free of safaris. MP tiger reserves have traditionally closed safaris on Diwali day, and core zones also close for one afternoon safari every week.

For a shorter break, see our 2 to 5 night options in Diwali packages across Madhya Pradesh.

Route 1: What does a jungle and Narmada Diwali look like?

This route starts in Jabalpur and is built on our 1 night Jabalpur and 2 night Kanha package, which starts from ₹16,900 per person. We add one extra night in Kanha so Diwali day stays relaxed.

Day 1, Dhanteras: Jabalpur and Bhedaghat. Arrive in Jabalpur and drive about 20–30 km to Bhedaghat. Take the boat ride through the Marble Rocks gorge from Panchvati Ghat and see Dhuandhar Falls.

Day 2, Choti Diwali: Drive to Kanha. Drive about 160–170 km (3.5–4 hours) to the Khatia side of Kanha. Fit in an afternoon safari if you have a permit.

Day 3, Diwali: A calm day at the lodge. No safari today. Rest, walk around the lodge, and celebrate Diwali evening at your stay with diyas.

Day 4, Govardhan Puja: Two safaris. Morning and afternoon safaris in the Kanha zones. This is your best day for wildlife.

Day 5, Bhai Dooj: Back to Jabalpur. One more morning safari if you like, then drive back to Jabalpur for your train or flight.

No one can promise a tiger sighting. See how we plan a Diwali jungle safari for zone and permit tips, or browse all our Kanha tour packages.

Route 2: Can you cover Ujjain, Omkareshwar and Maheshwar in five days?

Yes, and it is the most popular Diwali route for families who want darshan. Our Indore, Ujjain and Omkareshwar trip starts from ₹11,400 per person, and we add Maheshwar for the fourth night.

Day 1, Dhanteras: Indore to Ujjain. Land in Indore and drive about 55 km to Ujjain. Check in near the temple and see the evening lights.

Day 2, Choti Diwali: Ujjain darshan. Mahakal darshan in the late morning, when queues are usually shorter, then Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat on the Shipra.

Day 3, Diwali: Ujjain to Omkareshwar. Leave early and drive about 140 km to Omkareshwar. Darshan, then the Narmada aarti and deepdan in the evening.

Day 4, Govardhan Puja: Maheshwar. A short drive along the Narmada to Maheshwar. See Ahilya Fort, the long ghats and the handloom weavers.

Day 5, Bhai Dooj: Back to Indore. Drive about 91 km to Indore for your return.

Before you go, read our tips on Diwali crowds at Mahakal and deepdan in Omkareshwar. We do not promise special darshan; we plan around the quieter hours.

Route 3: Why choose Pachmarhi and Madhai for Diwali?

This route mixes cool hills with a jungle by the river. It follows our Madhai and Pachmarhi combo, which starts from ₹26,600 per person, cut to four nights for the festival.

Day 1, Dhanteras: Pipariya to Pachmarhi. Take a train to Pipariya and drive about 50 km up into the Satpura hills.

Day 2, Choti Diwali: Pachmarhi sightseeing. Viewpoints, waterfalls and caves. End with sunset at Dhoopgarh, the highest point in the hills.

Day 3, Diwali: An easy hill day. A short morning outing, then a slow afternoon and Diwali evening at your hotel. Nights are cool, so carry a jacket.

Day 4, Govardhan Puja: Drive to Madhai. Drive about 100 km to Madhai in Satpura Tiger Reserve. Take the boat across the Denwa river in the afternoon.

Day 5, Bhai Dooj: Morning safari and home. A morning jeep, boat or canoe safari, then head to Narmadapuram or Pipariya for your train.
