Plan a Diwali Jungle Safari in Kanha and Bandhavgarh

7 min read By Banjari MP Tours Private Limited

A Diwali jungle safari in Kanha and Bandhavgarh works best as a 4 to 5 night trip from Jabalpur, with two or three safaris in each park. Kanha's Khatia gate is about 160–170 km (3.5–4 hours) from Jabalpur, and Bandhavgarh's Tala gate about 165 km (3.5–4 hours). Morning safaris start around 6 AM and evening drives end near sunset.

Book permits early. MP safari permits open 120 days ahead on the official portal, the parks have traditionally shut safaris on Diwali day, and festival week slots fill fast.

Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya, the new moon of the Kartik month, usually in October or November. The festival runs from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj. Check this year's date before booking. We confirm it for you when we send your plan.

Why plan a Diwali jungle safari?

Diwali comes soon after the parks reopen. The core zones of Madhya Pradesh tiger reserves close through the monsoon months and open again in October. So in Diwali week the forest is still green, the grass is tall, and the air is fresh and cool in the mornings.

It is also a quiet way to spend the festival. Instead of crackers and traffic, you get sal forest, deer calls at dawn and evenings around the lodge. Many families like to light diyas at the resort and spend the next morning in the jungle.

One honest note: after the rains the grass is high, so animals can be harder to spot than in the dry summer months. No one can promise a tiger sighting. You get the best chance with more drives, so plan at least two or three safaris in each park.

Kanha or Bandhavgarh: which park suits your Diwali break?

Both parks are about 3.5 to 4 hours from Jabalpur, so you can pick one or do both. Here is how they compare.

What are the safari timings and closures in Diwali week?

Each park runs two safaris a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with a break in between. In October and November, morning drives run from about 6–6:15 AM to 11:30 AM, and evening drives from about 3 PM to sunset, roughly 5:45–6 PM.

There are two closures to plan around:

  • Diwali day. As per the MP Forest Department, the parks have traditionally been closed for safaris on the day of Diwali. Use that day for travel, rest or a lodge celebration.
  • One afternoon a week. Core zones in Madhya Pradesh close for one afternoon safari every week. We fix your slots around it.

Timings shift a little through the season, so we confirm the exact gate times when we book your drives.

How do you book a Diwali jungle safari permit?

Safari permits are sold on the MP Forest Department booking portal. Booking opens 120 days before the safari date, and the popular core zones for festival weeks sell out quickly.

Each permit is for one open jeep (Gypsy) with up to six people, plus a forest guide. The vehicle and guide are paid separately at the gate in most cases. Shared seats in larger vehicles may be offered in some zones. Ask us if you are travelling solo.

Carry the same original photo ID that you used for booking. It is checked at the gate before every drive.

We can book permits for you as part of the trip. See our pages on Kanha safari permits and Bandhavgarh safari booking, or read the full Kanha safari booking guide.

What does a 5-night Diwali tiger trail look like?

Our 5 night Jabalpur, Kanha and Bandhavgarh tour starts from ₹28,700 per person. It gives you two nights in each park and a first night in Jabalpur to see Bhedaghat and the Marble Rocks.

Short on time? Pick one park. The 2 night Kanha package from Jabalpur starts from ₹12,100 per person, and the 2 night Bandhavgarh package from Jabalpur starts from ₹12,200 per person. You can also browse all our Kanha tour packages.

The smart move is to put Diwali day in the middle of your trip as the drive day between parks. That way you lose no safari time to the closure.

What should you pack for a Diwali jungle safari?

Mornings in an open jeep feel cold in this season, even when the afternoon is warm. Dress in layers and peel them off as the sun comes up.

  • Warm jacket, cap and gloves for the morning drive
  • Light, earthy-coloured clothes (green, brown, khaki)
  • Scarf or mask for dust on the forest tracks
  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens
  • Water bottle and a small snack for the morning break
  • Original photo ID used for the permit
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses for the afternoon drive
  • No crackers in the forest. Keep Diwali celebrations quiet near the park.

Why book your Diwali jungle safari with us?

We are based in Jabalpur, the gateway to both parks. We plan the car, the lodge, the permits and the order of your drives, so the Diwali closure and the weekly afternoon break fall on travel days, not safari days.

We will always tell you honestly what to expect. We never promise a tiger sighting. We do our best to give you the right zones, the right number of drives and a comfortable stay.
